Sometimes winter break from school isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

The unstructured, unscheduled days and weeks during the holiday break, combined with heightened expectations of “fun” and “quality family time”–and holiday stress thrown into the mix–means that breakdowns in communication and behavior can occur. For young people who struggle with depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, or who simply don’t do well with lack of structure, winter break can be the start of a downward spiral that may jeopardize a successful transition back to school in January.

PRN’s Winter Break Support Program is a customized, 6 week package for families whose adolescent or young adult child will benefit from additional care, support and guidance during their winter break from school. This program also provides parents with the tools and resources they may need to create adequate structure and support to their child during this time. The six week timeframe allows for a period of coordination between the family, student, and existing clinical, academic and other resources, as well as a period of transition back into the school setting. Continuing care packages are also available beyond the initial six weeks at the family’s discretion.

Our goal, as with all of PRN’s programs, is to understand the needs of the whole family system so that we can customize our support services to best meet those needs. As such, the specific services offered within the support package include a degree of flexibility to allow for customization. PRN’s Family Consultants will serve as the primary point of contact and liaison for the family, coordinating all outreach, networking and support services; providing written and verbal assessment, recommendations and treatment plan updates, as well as 24/7 crisis management during the course of PRN’s involvement.

If someone you know might benefit from additional support over the upcoming winter break, please give us a call at 888-762-5973 or send us a note: admissions@prnforfamilies.com. For more information, visit us on the web at: http://www.prnforfamilies.com/home-from-school/.

Holiday season tips,
brought to you by our TRACKS clients:

Remember to breathe, especially when you are stressed or anxious.
Do what helps you feel centered–do yoga, be with friends, go for a walk, make time to laugh.
Go outside for some fresh air every day, even if you have to force yourself off the couch.
Remind yourself that things don’t have to be perfect. Your mistakes probably aren’t permanent and you can usually have a do-over.
Paying it forward feels pretty good.
Have a healthy routine, and try to stick with it when things get busy.
